Robert Lue, 1964-2020

November 13, 2020

We are heartbroken to share that our beloved faculty director, Robert Lue, passed away on Wednesday, November 11. Rob was appointed as the inaugural Richard L. Menschel Faculty Director of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning in 2013. He had a vision for a teaching and learning center that would attract and energize faculty, graduate students and undergraduates; that would spark excitement and creativity about what could happen in the classroom; and that would build an intergenerational community around teaching. During the seven years of his tenure, Rob transformed the Bok...

Bok Helps “School Go Remote”

October 21, 2020

This summer was a busy time at the Bok Center. In the November-December issue of Harvard Magazine, the Bok Center’s Director of Pedagogy Adam Beaver describes some of the ways in which the Bok Center worked with the Office of Undergraduate Education to help faculty prepare to teach remotely this fall. One of the unique challenges facing fall term faculty—one that they did not face in the spring, when they pivoted online halfway through the semester—was the absence of in person meetings where faculty and students  could build rapport and community that could be sustained...

Launching a program to solve global challenges

October 7, 2020

In a recent article in the Harvard Gazette, Bok Center Faculty Director Robert Lue invites Harvard undergraduate students to join the Lemann Program on Creativity and Entrepreneurship (LPCE) and embrace their potential as change agents. "Do you have an idea that could positively transform society?" he asked. Our groundbreaking program develops the ability of students to propose and implement innovative projects. TF? The ‘Berg? PAF? QRD? OEB? OMG! A Glossary of Harvard Terms

August 25, 2020

As we prepare to launch a new academic year, a lot has changed at Harvard—including the terms in which we speak about teaching. Now, in addition to asking how many pages of reading a professor assigns, we’re comparing notes on how they balance the synchronous and asynchronous components of their course, as if we’ve been forming our personal opinions about asynchronous learning for decades rather than mere months. Yet there’s an awful lot about teaching and learning at Harvard that can’t, or won’t, be renamed at the speed of Zoom. So much of what we do in...

Mentoring Online: Lessons in Motivation

July 10, 2020

As classes moved online this spring, so did the work of the Bok Center’s twenty-seven undergraduate Mentors. Responsible for engaging Allston-Brighton children in interdisciplinary science, technology, and literacy programs at the Harvard Ed Portal, these undergraduates gain experience with skills central to good teaching, and reflect on their own development as teachers and learners.

When the Ed Portal’s programming shifted online...

Celebrating Senior Learning Lab Undergraduate Fellows

May 29, 2020

Learning Lab Undergraduate Fellows (or LLUFs) are a core part of the intergenerational team at the Bok Center’s Learning Lab. LLUFs often have terrific intuitions about the pedagogy that will most engage and appeal to their peers, and they use this expertise as learners to help the Bok Center’s faculty partners design and test new learning experiences for their courses. Given the fact that many of these assignments and activities involve new or at least alternative modes of communication—drawing, speaking, coding, 3D...

Moving Online, Not Apart: Culture and Communication Consultants Engage with International TFs

May 27, 2020

As we’ve transitioned to remote teaching, our undergraduate fellows have been important partners in supporting our programming. The Professional Communication Program for International Teachers and Scholars has a team of ten undergraduate Culture and Communication Consultants (CCCs), whose work this semester helped us maintain our connection to campus and to each other. The CCCs...
