History of Science

2022–2023

My capstone project for this year will be a syllabus for a semester-long pedagogy class. This year was the first time we have a pedagogy class, despite the many challenges, specifically scheduling, it was very positive first step towards institutionalizing this training in the department. In light of this effort, I thought of preparing a syllabus that could be used for future iterations of this course. This effort should complement the canvas website on “Pedagogy and Teaching in the History of Science Department” which I created last year. It’s my hope that both these efforts will continue to outlast my tenure in the department and will provide a basis for further development and institutionalization of a pedagogy in the History of Science department.

My capstone project is a Canvas site meant to provide TFs in the History of Science department with information and teaching resources that will enable a successful teaching experience. The Canvas site is also meant to act as a repository ensuring  the continuity of institutional knowledge. This will be the first step, which will complement more structured support for teaching in the department in the form of a future Pedagogy Colloquium. Many parts of the website are still "under-construction" and  will continue to be populated over the course of the semester.

I faced two challenges as the History of Science PF this year: 1) the department had not had a PF for many years, and 2) COVID made written resources more accessible than workshops. Much of my work this year involved supporting a (highly successful) new, faculty-run 5-session syllabus design workshop. Part of this role entailed assembling syllabus design resources, which formed the core of a new teaching resources page on our graduate student resources website. While these asynchronous resources seemed helpful to graduate students this year, hopefully next year's PF will be able to provide more in-person pedagogy support.
