Communicate your scholarship, engage your audience, speak with presence...even in Zoom!
Erika Bailey, Head of Voice and Speech, American Repertory Theater; Lecturer on Theater, Dance & Media
Are you preparing for conference talks or academic interviews this winter? When we think about communicating our research, we often focus on the material we want to share, what we should say. As we think about how to craft the story of our scholarship, how we speak—how we represent ourselves genuinely and authentically, engage the audience, and invite them to ask questions—is what makes the material compelling. Our physical as well as our vocal presence play an integral role in our ability to engage our listeners, whether they’re peers, future colleagues, or students. In this session, we will build vocabulary for effective and engaging speaking, and practice speaking as a physical act. Using exercises from the theatre, we’ll explore how to better use your voice, your physical expression, and your relationship to the Zoom room to capture and hold your audience’s attention.
This session is part of a GSAS Dean’s priority and is designed specifically for advanced PhD students giving conference talks, preparing for virtual job talks and interviews, and thinking about communication for their professional development.
