Harvard Horizons
The Bok Center collaborates with the Harvard Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) to produce Harvard Horizons, annually highlighting the exceptional research of eight PhD students. Selected through a competitive process, these scholars receive training and mentorship from the Bok Center to refine their research presentations, culminating in a public symposium where they share their work in concise, compelling talks.
As part of the Bok Center’s broader work in supporting graduate students’ communication skills, Harvard Horizons provides a unique opportunity for a select group of scholars to develop advanced skills in communicating their research effectively. We work with them to uncover the story behind their research, make that story engaging for a general audience, and refine their ability to deliver an engaging public talk with strong vocal and physical presence—skills that are deeply tied to teaching and learning. Harvard Horizons scholars also learn to communicate visually, breaking down complex academic topics into clear and compelling presentations that enhance audience understanding. This training not only prepares them for the Harvard Horizons Symposium but also strengthens their communication skills for teaching, job talks, and public engagement.
Each year, the Harvard Horizons Symposium is held in April at Sanders Theatre. The 2025 symposium will take place on Tuesday, April 8, from 5-7:15pm. This year's mentors are Marlon Kuzmick, Director of the Bok Center’s Learning Lab, Jordan Koffman, Assistant Director of the Learning Lab, and Erika Bailey, Head of Voice and Speech at the American Repertory Theater and Lecturer on Theater, Dance & Media.
