Graduate Student Workshop: Communicating Your Research

Date:

Thursday, October 20, 2022, 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Location:

Lehman Hall, Graduate Student Lounge (Room 204)

Led by Pamela Pollock, Director of Professional Development, Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning

Sponsored by the GSAS Student Center, GSAS Student Council, and the Derek Bok Bok Center for Teaching and Learning

How do you respond when someone asks you what you are working on? How can you describe your high-level research to introductory students, or to colleagues in other fields? Do you struggle to get out of the weeds and explain the big picture?

In this session we will learn some key strategies for engaged communication, practice, and get feedback on communicating your research. We consider how the basic principles of good pedagogy are also the basic principles of effective and engaging speaking: connecting with the audience, having clear goals, and structuring the content to help the audience understand and become engaged in the material.

For additional resources check out the Engaged Communication module on the Bok Center’s Hit the Ground Running Canvas site. Make sure you’ve registered for the Canvas site to access the module. And for another opportunity to practice communicating your research in a low-stakes environment, check out the GSAS Student Center’s Fireside Symposia!
