Dr. David UngerProject-based classes can deeply engage students in authentic learning, but they can also be complicated to organize and manage. Open-ended student-led projects allow students to bring course material to life by calling on their creativity, life experience, and broader interests. Students also practice life skills related to teamwork, problem solving, and planning. The rewards of this approach can be well worth the challenges that these projects can present to both teacher and students. In this hands-on session, Dr. Unger (Director of Administration, Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments; Lecturer on the History of Science) will introduce you to practical techniques, drawn from professional project management practices and project-based learning (PBL) literature, to enable you to break projects down into manageable steps, teach necessary skills throughout the semester, and mesh the project work into other kinds of class work.
