SUMMARY:Faculty Lunch with Professor Eric Beerbohm: Civil Discourse in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:
Many of us have chosen low-tech classrooms, asking students to close their laptops, yet AI continues to shape how they develop their views, think through ethical questions, and engage with one another. Join Eric Beerbohm (Government) and faculty colleagues to explore how AI may make learning from disagreement harder—from arguments students can repeat but struggle to defend to conversations that bolster their conviction that they are in the right, or that every question has a settled answer. We will also consider how, on the other hand, there are backstage uses of AI that engage students in disagreement: a dashboard that goes beyond fixed-choice classroom polling, mapping agreements and disagreements in students’ free-form responses in real time, and an analysis that draws on everything a student contributes to the course—from written work to classroom discussion—to trace how their thinking develops over a semester. Together, we will explore the challenges and opportunities presented by AI for faculty committed to fostering open dialogue in their classrooms.

Open to FAS faculty. Lunch will be provided.
