How do you create a classroom environment where students feel empowered to engage with complex topics or challenging issues? What strategies can you use to help students feel safe, supported, and enthusiastic about discussing the issues that matter to them? While there may be a potential for conflict when discussing challenging topics, these moments can also lead to the most profound learning and connection. This seminar offers a reflective space to explore ways to create an environment where students feel empowered to listen to each other and engage in purposeful dialogue with topics that have personal or political dimensions, allowing discussions to go deeper. We'll delve into skills like building a strong classroom community, practicing mindful listening, and fostering awareness of emotions (somatic awareness). You'll also learn and practice techniques for facilitating constructive dialogue when tensions and conflict arise and rebuilding trust after a challenging exchange. This seminar is designed for TFs across disciplines who want to gain knowledge about and practice these skills to develop their own unique approach to facilitating rich and meaningful conversations in your classroom.
