Science is an active, hands-on discipline that involves problem solving, technical skill development, and data interpretation. Teaching science, however, is all-too-often a two-dimensional PowerPoint full of facts, equations, and diagrams to memorize. How do we transition our science education to look more like our science in practice? Can shifts in our classroom entice a more diverse, confident, and curious generation of scientists? At this faculty lunch, Robin Hopkins (John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Natural Sciences; Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology; Faculty Fellow of the Arnold Arboretum) will present her story of creating and teaching an undergraduate research experience course. This session will focus on her motivations, which include demystifying science for students from diverse backgrounds; and on her results, which include data from course surveys taken at the start and end of her course. The impact of the global pandemic on hands-on research experience will also be discussed.
