Robin Bernstein, Dillon Professor of American History; Professor of African and African American Studies and of Studies of Women, Gender, & Sexuality

In the fall of 2019, Robin Bernstein launched an experimental course titled "Introduction to Graduate School: Skills and Practices for Scholarly Success." Addressed to G1 and G2 doctoral students in all fields of the social sciences and the arts and humanities, and offered not through any department but instead through GSAS, Bernstein's course aimed to train students in foundational skills and sustainable practices to foster success in graduate school and beyond. Furthermore, the course aimed to reveal the "hidden curriculum" of grad school and thus democratize knowledge that is too often limited to students from elite backgrounds. In this lunchtime session, Bernstein will share the results of the experiment: who took the course, how students responded to different activities, and evidence of what students learned. Most of all, Bernstein will share what she learned regarding grad students' academic needs and how those needs can be addressed within and beyond departments.
