# Thank-a-Teacher Spring 2024

May 31, 2024

This past spring semester the Bok Center continued our [Thank-a-Teacher](/thank-a-teacher) program to elevate students’ appreciation for their instructors, as part of our goal of celebrating teaching in the FAS. We asked students: Do you have an instructor who is making a difference in your life? The response was overwhelming, with 90 thank you notes from both undergraduate and graduate students!

The submissions were kind, thoughtful, and heartwarming, and showed the appreciation students have for their professors, teaching fellows, and course assistants. Here we share a few highlights from students across a range of courses:

> I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible impact you've had on my academic journey at Harvard. Your passion for science and your unwavering support have been truly inspiring. You've not only sparked my interest in chemistry but also nurtured my curiosity and guided me in exploring future professional paths. Your kindness and openness have meant the world to me, and I am incredibly grateful for your mentorship. Thank you for being such an exceptional educator and for making a profound difference in my life.

> Thanks to your class, I see art differently. In fact, I see the world differently as well. Thank you for all of your incredible and enjoyable lectures. Remember how after the final I said that I felt like I would remember what I've learned for a "really long time?" Well, I should correct myself. I feel that this knowledge has been so deeply ingrained in me that it would stay with me for a lifetime. Thank you for a lifetime of knowledge, and I hope you have a great summer!

> In many classes I've taken here at Harvard, I have been taught how to share my perspectives and ideas with the class. It is in your class, however, that for the first time I was challenged to take opposite perspectives from my own and work with students who approach ideas differently than me. Doing so enabled me to reckon with my own perspectives and views and taught me the value of grappling with the other side, even when it may feel difficult to do so. It helps me to begin formulating questions — questions that have helped me further shape my worldview and left me with ideas to still explore.

> As the semester comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for being such an amazing professor and for helping me feel like I could actually get into the field of computational neuroscience. Your passion for the subject is infectious, and I could really feel the amount of care you put into making sure our class understood the content. I appreciate how you welcomed curiosity with open arms, providing invaluable insights and encouragement every step of the way. You managed to make what seemed like an impossible field for me (I was never really a math-y person) so much more accessible.

Last week, we distributed notes to a total of 86 instructors across all divisions and 36 departments! We look forward to continuing this program this fall. Students can begin submitting their notes of gratitude on October 15, 2024.
