Robert Lue

We are heartbroken to share that our beloved faculty director, Robert Lue, passed away on Wednesday, November 11. Rob was appointed as the inaugural Richard L. Menschel Faculty Director of the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning in 2013. He had a vision for a teaching and learning center that would attract and energize faculty, graduate students and undergraduates; that would spark excitement and creativity about what could happen in the classroom; and that would build an intergenerational community around teaching. During the seven years of his tenure, Rob transformed the Bok Center by every metric, greatly expanding our reach and impact, creating a vibrant community of undergraduate and graduate student fellows, more than doubling the number of staff, and designing a space that is collaborative and welcoming.

Rob was an innovative and passionate educator who was deeply committed to equity and inclusion. He had the remarkable ability both to imagine novel ways to make the world better, and to bring his ideas to reality. Rob was generous and compassionate; he found joy in so many aspects of life. We are thankful for all that he made possible at the Bok Center, across Harvard, and around the world. The tributes and reminiscences that have poured into the Bok Center over the past few days are testimony to how many people Rob inspired, and we are touched by the memories you have shared with us. We will miss him.
