Computer Science Debuts Inclusive Teaching Pilot

Noelle Lopez leads a discussion

This week in The Harvard Crimson, Bok Center Assistant Director for Equity and Inclusion Noelle Lopez described an asynchronous practice teaching scenario in which an undergraduate course assistant receives text messages late at night from friends in their course asking for help with an assignment. “I think it helps surface some of the complex dynamics around how there can be inequity in community or in exposure to different resources in C[omputer] S[cience],” Lopez said. The practice scenario was developed as part of a new inclusive teaching training being piloted with several Computer Science courses this semester – CS 121, CS 61, and, possibly, CS 109a. The training is the product of collaboration between the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning; the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’s Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging; and the Computer Science department.
