Behind the Bok: Casey Cann

Each month we will profile a member of the Bok staff in order for our friends and colleagues to learn more about us, the full range of work that we do, how we approach our work, and what is happening in the world of teaching and learning from different perspectives.

Casey Cann, Technical Operations and Learning Lab Studio Coordinator

Q: What is your educational background?

A: I attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design for Film and Video, as well as Interrelated Media (mostly event production, sound, and lighting).

Q: How did you come to do this work?

A: With a filmmaking background, it’s very easy to fall into specialty work, where you’re only serving a singular role (only operating the camera, only processing footage, etc.). What drew me most to the Learning Lab was the huge array of media and approaches we use. I find it really refreshing to be able to teach a podcasting workshop in the morning and then turn around and build a pop-up studio in the afternoon.

Q: Describe a project that you are excited about right now.

A: Summers in the Learning Lab tend to mean workflow redesign and this year is definitely more exciting than previous years, as we’re getting ready to go back to working in-person in the studio. For some of the small, 1-2 person studio setups we’ll be using a new tool for live-switching video feeds, which will output a fully edited project that’s already 80% finished and ready to receive quick touch-ups before we send it out.

Q: What do you love to do when you’re not doing teaching and learning work?

A: I really enjoy working with independent artists to get their work professionally captured. I've worked with a few Boston-based artists over the past couple months on documenting their art. I'm also coordinating as the producer for a local film that’s going into production this summer.
