K–12 Outreach

The Socially Engaged Learning initiative at the Bok Center supports faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates in pedagogical approaches that impact K-12 education, helping faculty and students use their engagement in the community to inform their on-campus teaching and learning.

Through the Harvard Ed Portal Mentoring Program, Harvard undergraduates can mentor K-12 students one-on-one in creative and expository writing, public speaking, math, science, technology, and the arts; lead curriculum-based clubs; and deliver curriculum to school groups.

Through the Life Sciences Outreach program, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows can engage with high school biology teachers and students. We offer professional development programs for high school teachers, as well as hands-on laboratory experiences for high school students.

Opportunities and Consultations for Faculty

We can help faculty identify appropriate outreach opportunities and partners - whether as a mechanism to connect one’s research with the greater community, perhaps as a broader impacts portion of a grant, or as a mechanism for undergraduates to share their knowledge with a younger audience as a component of an undergraduate course.  Our network of K-12 education programs and teacher professional development programs includes hundreds of high school teachers from the sciences, arts and humanities, as well as other disciplines, located in the Boston area and across New England.
