Rebecca Miller Brown, *Assistant Director, Graduate Student Programming, Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning*

What is a teaching statement? What are the conventions of the genre? What can you learn from writing one? Whether you’re preparing to go on the academic job market or just getting started teaching, writing a teaching statement is a reflective exercise that can help you articulate your own goals and values as a teacher. As you work to demonstrate your approach in the classroom, describe your goals for your students, and convey your teaching persona, you learn more about yourself. In this session, we’ll consider goals and different approaches to the teaching statement, look at concrete examples, and work through activities that will help you start drafting your own statement.

*This session is part of the Fall Teaching Conference, which is designed to prepare new and experienced graduate student teachers for their roles as Teaching Fellows in the FAS. Pre-registration is required. Learn more [here](/fall-teaching-conference-winter-teaching-week).*
