Once you have identified [learning objectives](/learning-objectives "Learning Objectives") and outlined a [capstone assignment](/capstone-assignments "Capstone Assignments "), consider modules as a way to [scaffold](/scaffolding-assignments "Scaffolding Assignments") assignments.

A helpful way for thinking through and organizing the various components of your course is to divide the semester into modules or units. These modules may build to a final, cumulative project (final exam) or, taken as a whole they can show students how they will meet the course learning goals. A common way to create these modules is to look at the various summative assignments that you have planned and schedule them for the end of each module. This could be a midterm exam or unit quiz, rough draft of a research paper, or creative project. Ideally, a unit assessment is both summative of the course content for that part of the course, and it builds skills toward the larger capstone assignment.
