Bok Exploratory Seminar on Case Teaching

case study

April 27th, 9am - 3pm

Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning
1 Oxford St.
Science Center, Room 418D
Cambridge MA, 02138

The Bok Center’s Exploratory Seminar on Case Teaching will bring together faculty from across the Harvard community to examine what “case study” teaching currently looks like in different schools and disciplines, and imagine, as a group, how we can support and expand case-based approaches in the undergraduate classroom. By experiencing firsthand a few different flavors of case teaching, we’ll identify the varieties of “case study” teaching being used in different schools and disciplines. We’ll then ask whether these varieties reflect different student populations and different learning goals. Finally, we’ll develop strategies aimed at fostering collaboration among faculty who already teach with cases and supporting faculty who would like to integrate case-based approaches into their teaching.

The seminar will take place on Thursday 27 April from 9am – 3pm, with an optional dinner the evening before. During the seminar, participants will be able to experience multiple modalities of case teaching led by experienced faculty, and will be invited to debrief with each other and to engage a roundtable of faculty already using cases to teach in the FAS. A modest briefing book will be distributed in early April for participants interested in undertaking some light pre-reading.

Short case teaching sessions will be led by:

James Honan, Senior Lecturer on Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education
Teaches classes at HGSE and HKS

Katherine Merseth, Senior Lecturer on Education at Harvard Graduate School of Education
